Butterflies in the Glasshouse
RHS Garden Wisley’s experience ‘Butterflies in the Glasshouse’ returns from 16 January to 28 February 2010.
This truly tropical event provides a beautiful winter-time escape amongst the extensive exotic plant collection in the Glasshouse. Hundreds of tropical butterflies of all sizes and colours will once again be looked after by staff from the Glass Team before they hatch, spread their wings and take flight between the tall palms and lush foliage.
The event is set to equip visitors with more interesting facts and opportunities to study the butterflies close-up than ever before, with plenty of easy-to-read information points and observation platforms laden with fruit. There will also be opportunities to learn about butterfly-wing patterns, courtship flights and lifecycles.
Families can also enjoy fun, butterfly-themed activities on weekends. Have a go at sowing verbena seed (16 – 17 January), make your own grass-head butterfly (13 – 14 February) or create a caterpillar puppet (20 – 21 February). 10am – 3.30pm in the Clore Learning Centre.
Due to unforeseen problems leading to necessary maintenance work, the Tropical Zone of The Glasshouse will be closed on Thursday 4 February from 2pm. Unfortunately the Butterflies event will therefore be closed during this time but we are hoping to reopen on Friday 5 January. Please note the number of butterflies to see on the morning of Thursday 4 February and on Friday 5 February will be limited. Please keep checking the RHS website for up-to-date information before you visit.
Butterflies in The Glasshouse will be open from 10am–3.45pm daily (last entry 3.30pm). The Garden will close at 4.30pm (last entry 3.30pm). The experience is free with normal garden entry. Click here for more information.
