ENO - Donizetti double bill

ENO begins 2010 with a bel canto Donizetti double of the great Italian's most dramatic opera, Lucia di Lammermoor, and his heart-warming romantic comedy, The Elixir of Love.

Lucia di Lammermoor

Award-winning director David Alden's electrifying production of Lucia di Lammermoor (featuring the classic soprano aria 'Regnava nel silencio' made famous by Maria Callas) returns to the London Coliseum stage, following its critical success in 2008. The opera charts the gripping tale of naïve Lucia, who is manipulated by her conniving brother into a politically advantageous marriage, and who ultimately descends into bloody murder and madness. Award-winning conductor Antony Walker leads a brilliant returning cast including Anna Christy in the title role, Clive Bayley as Raimondo and bel canto tenor Barry Banks as Byronic outcast, Edgardo.

The Elixir of Love

Jonathan Miller returns to ENO following the enduring successes of his previous smash-hit productions, including The Mikado, Rigoletto, The Barber of Seville and more recently his new rendering of La bohème. This staging affectionately relocates the action from 19th-century rural Italy to small-town 1950s America. It tells of a young lovesick mechanic and his quest to find a cure for his broken heart. Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado makes his British opera debut with an exemplary cast including John Tessier (Nemorino), Sarah Tynan (Adina), and comic maestro Andrew Shore as the beguiling Dulcamara.

'Miller emerges as the evening's chief hero with his keenly observed, generous-spirited production' - New York Magazine
