Sir Andrew Davis
Biography
Davis was born in Hertfordshire and studied at King's College at the Royal College of Music in Cambridge where he was Organ Scholar, and in Rome with Franco Ferrara.
He was awarded a CBE in May 1992. In January 1999, Queen Elizabeth II appointed him a Knight Bachelor in the New Year Honours List.
Music
Andrew conducts a strikingly wide repertory and is equally at home in classical, Romantic and 20th-century scores and the outer reaches of contemporary music.
He was associate conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra from 1970 and in 1975, he was principal conductor with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. .
From 1988, he was Glyndebourne’s music director, and he had a successful career as the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s chief conductor from 1989, revealing his fondness of English music.
