Dmitri Hvorostovsky
Biography
Hvorostovsky's defeat of Bryn Terfel in the Cardiff Singer of the World 1989 competition may have brought the Siberian-born Hvorostovsky to the attention of the western world, but his formal musical training began when he was seven years old, studying piano at music school in his home city of Krasnoyarsk.
From there he moved on to the Karsnoyarsk school of arts where he studied under Jekatherina Yofel. On graduation he became a soloist with the Kranoyarsk Opera, winning prizes at the Glinka National Competition in the former Soviet Union in 1987 and the Toulouse Singing Competition in 1988. In 1989 he pulled off his shock victory in Cardiff and hasn't looked back since.
Music
Dmitri is now one of the most sought-after singers in the world and frequently performs at all the world's major opera houses, including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; the Bavarian State Opera, Munich; the Berlin State Opera; the Teatro alla Scala, Milan; the Vienna State Opera; the Metropolitan Opera, New York; and the St Petersburg Opera.
He has also given recitals in Seoul, Oslo, Istanbul, Jerusalem, South America, Australia and the Far East, working with orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic. He recently toured Russia with a programme of war songs, performing for veterans of the Second World War, which was televised to an audience of over 100 million.
His most notable roles include Onegin in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, Figaro in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, the title role in Mozart's Don Giovanni, Posa in Verdi's Don Carlo and Francesco in I Masnadieri.
Dmitri Hvorostovsky has released numerous recordings for both Philips Classics and Delos Records, including opera recordings of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, Verdi's La Traviata with Kiri Te Kanawa, Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, Rimsky-Korsakov's The Tsar's Bride and Verdi's Don Carlo.
