Vasily Petrenko
Biography
Vasily Petrenko was born in St Petersburg, Russia in 1976. He received his music education at St Petersburg Capella Boys Music School - the oldest music school in Russia - and then St Petersburg Conservatoire. He studied conducting with Ilya Musin, and later Mariss Jansons, Yuri Temirkanov and Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Petrenko has been resident conductor at the St Petersburg Opera and Ballet Theatre and took up the baton as Principal Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2006. He is the youngest person in the history of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic to have held the position and in September 2009 he signed a historic contract to stay in Liverpool until 2015 as the orchestra's Chief Conductor.
Music
Named Young Artist Of The Year at the Classic FM Gramophone Awards 2007, Vasily's influence on the orchestra's creative output is noticeable and his award comes following an exciting year for the RLPO and will continue as he conducts the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in at least 25 concerts in Liverpool, in addition to national and international touring dates with the Orchestra, recordings, special concerts and events.
