Maxim Vengerov
Biography
Born in Siberia, Maxim took up the violin aged five, winning the Junior Wieniawski Competition in Poland at 10 and was told at 16 that he no longer needed a teacher.
He soon appeared as a soloist with well-known orchestras, including the BBC Philharmonic and USSR State Symphony Orchestra.
Music
Maxim, indulging in his passion for music, teaches master classes to aspiring musicians and is Honorary Envoy for Music for the United Nations Children's Fund, the first classical musician to be appointed, visiting Bosnia, Croatia and Uganda to perform for children in war.
Awards include two Grammy nominations for Classical Album of the Year (Prokofiev and Shostakovich violin concertos CD 1995) and for Best Instrumental Soloist with Orchestra, as well as 'Record of the Year' by Gramophone.
