Northern Sinfonia

Northern Sinfonia is Classic FM’s orchestra in the North East and at The Sage Gateshead...

Northern Sinfonia with its Music Director Thomas Zehetmair command a unique position in Europe, with repertoire spanning three centuries and regularly commissioned new work.

The orchestra’s work includes concerts, broadcasts and national and international touring. Regular appearances at major UK festivals include the Edinburgh International Festival and the Aldeburgh Festival, and in 2006 Northern Sinfonia became the first chamber and non-BBC orchestra to play for the final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year, held in The Sage Gateshead. The orchestra also regularly appears at other leading venues throughout the world including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Musikverein in Vienna and the Royal Albert Hall in London where it has performed at the BBC Proms to great critical acclaim.

Northern Sinfonia has built a distinctive reputation as a fresh thinking, versatile orchestra and recent projects away from the classical mainstream have included working with the Pet Shop Boys at Swan Hunter’s Shipyard in Wallsend, and being invited by harpist and striking singer Joanna Newsom to join her UK tour launching her critically acclaimed album Ys.  In 2008 Northern Sinfonia became Classic FM’s orchestra in the North East and at The Sage Gateshead.
