The winners of the Classical BRIT Awards 2010 with NS&I have been announced at a ceremony attended by classical music’s great and good at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Welsh boys Only Men Aloud beat nine other nominees for the title NS&I Album of the Year, for Band of Brothers. They were so happy with their Award that they could probably be heard back in their homeland!
Vasily Petrenko was crowned Male Artist of the Year for his recording of Shostakovich’s Symphony No.11 with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Classic FM’s Orchestra in North-West England.
Revered soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa took to the stage to perform and also to collect a Classical BRIT Award for Lifetime Achievement in Music from actor Jeremy Irons.
Another soprano was named Female Artist of the Year, Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu. Her performance of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly was conducted by Antonio Pappano, who himself picked up the Critics’ Award for his recording of Verdi’s Requiem.
The composition awards went to Thomas Newman, whose Revolutionary Road won Soundtrack of the Year, and Thomas Adès, who was named Composer of the Year. Finally, violinist Jack Liebeck won Young British Classical Performer of the Year.
