Barenboim: music shouldn't be straitjacketed

Daniel Barenboim played a surprise free concert in the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern last Friday (8 April).
The world-renowned pianist and conductor played a series of pieces with the Staatskapelle Berlin, in a concert celebrating the 60th anniversary of his first live performance.
The event was free to attend and those who could not make it in to the performance itself were invited to watch the concert via a live video relay, a move in keeping with Barenboim’s passion for bringing music to as wide an audience as possible.
Classic FM was lucky enough to be in attendance for this special one-off event, and following his typically sublime performance Barenboim talked to us about the joys of performing in unconventional places, his views on the arts cuts and what the future has in store for him.
