Kate Royal on life, love and music

Wednesday, 2 February 2011 13:43

With perfect timing as Valentine's Day fast approaches, the lyric soprano Kate Royal is about to release a new CD called A Lesson in Love.

The album charts a young girl’s journey of love and loss through a combination of German lieder, English and American songs and French melodies. Presented in four chapters - Waiting, Meeting, Wedding and Betrayal, it follows a young girl’s relationship from her first kiss and the thrill of blossoming love to the joy of love fulfilled.

Royal is joined by pianist Malcolm Martineau for what is a very personal song cycle, which comes hard on the heels of two critically acclaimed orchestral discs, the eponymously titled Kate Royal and Midsummer Night.

She spoke to Classic FM's Anne-Marie Minhall about Life, Love and expressing both through music.

A Lesson in Love will be released on 7 February. The exclusive iTunes digital album also includes a bonus track, Reynaldo Hahn’s Infidélité.
