The Priests on Christmas and The Pogues

Thursday, 9 December 2010 09:09

As they release their new Christmas album, Noël, The Priests tell Classic FM about their collaboration with former Pogues singer and poet Shane MacGowan. Together they recorded a version of Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth, memorably recorded by Bing Crosby and David Bowie in 1977.

Father Martin admits that Shane's voice is “very different from ours” and that they were apprehensive about meeting, but says “it was a fascinating encounter”.

Noël also contains many Christmas carols, and Father Eugene says: "I would like to think that in the hustle and bustle, amidst the tinsel, the glitter and the lights, people will be able to soak up the lovely carols and get into the spirit of Christmas."

Aside from all their concerts, tours and recording, The Priests are still three parish priests with duties to perform.

The Priests’ self-titled debut album was released in 2008 and stormed the official album charts, reaching No.5 and becoming the fastest selling UK debut for a classical act – as certified by The Guinness Book of World Records.
