Alex James Bows out of Popstar to Opera Star

Alex James' hopes of succeeding in the opera world were dashed last night as he became the first celebrity to be voted off Popstar to Operastar.

Alex's high energy performance of Rossini's Largo al factotum from the Barber of Seville won a standing ovation from the audience, but he failed to impress audiences at home who left him languishing at the bottom of the pile in the public phone vote.

“It’s been great – what a blast,” said the Blur bass player and Classic FM presenter. “I’m disappointed but enjoyed every minute of the experience."

He was joined in the bottom two by pop star Vanessa White from the girl band The Saturdays, whose shakey performance of O Mio Babbino Caro failed to impress the critics.

While Alex can now go back to playing opera on his show the A to Z of Classic FM Music, the rest of the celebrities are back in training with their mentors ready for the next Friday's performance on ITV1 from 9pm - and judging from what we saw on the first show, Katherine and Rolando still have got a lot of work to do!

"It was Rossini in the style of Just William," Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen offers his view of Alex's performance, read all about it in his exclusive Popstar to Opera Star blog for Classic FM.
