One of the favourites to win Popstar to Operastar, Darius Campbell has told Classic FM that a change career from pop star to crossover opera star could well be on the cards if he goes all the way to the final of the TV talent show.
The Scottish singer and West End star has always had an affinity with opera thanks to his father's passion for the genre; "My Dad is such an opera fanatic and I think he always hoped for me to follow a more classical route."
Darius got his first taste of the opera world when a last minute audition with Scottish Opera won him a non-singing role as a Trojan boy in their production of Carmen.
"I was given an opportunity after that to be classically trained," Darius revealed backstage at the recording of the ITV1 show Operastar. "I had to choose whether to follow a path into opera or go back to school and get into university. I missed my mates and I did want to go to university so I didn't take the path which could have led to me becoming an opera singer. For the last 15 years I've wondered what if, what would life be like if I had taken that chance."
Darius has been encouraged by the support he has received from both his loyal fans and new fans from the show; "If enough Classic FM listeners get behind me and vote for me on the show - you never know I could be coming in to see you and asking you to play my new classical album."
