A CD of world première recordings of Baroque violin music and one of Paganini's Violin Concertos Nos. 1 and 2.
Giuliano Carmignola - Concerto Italiano
Every day this week, Mark Forrest champions a few Baroque composers who, it’s fair to say, haven’t exactly been household names on Classic FM – until now, that is! Join Mark on Afternoons to hear from the likes of Domenico Dall-Oglio, Michele Stratico and Pietro Nardini, all of whom have their works performed on this new CD, Concerto Italiano. Violinist Giuliano Carmignola is joined by the Venice Baroque Orchestra conducted by Andrea Marcon, for a series of world première recordings.
Olli Mustonen – Beethoven Piano Concertos Nos. 4 and 5
Pianist Olli Mustonen has spent the last few years performing and recording the complete Beethoven piano concertos – and this CD marks the conclusion of the project. Beethoven himself apparently intended his concertos to be performed without a conductor – so that’s exactly what Mustonen has done, directing as he does the Tapiola Sinfonietta from the keyboard. We’ll be playing their performance of Nos. 4 and 5 regularly over the next few weeks on Classic FM.
Alexander Romanovsky – Sergei Rachmaninov
The young Russian pianist Alexander Romanovsky here gives a soulful performance of the music of Rachmaninov, focussing on some of the composer’s most beautiful works for solo piano. This disc includes Rachmaninov’s set of Etudes-Tableaux, alongside the Variations on a Theme of Corelli. We’re tipping Romanovsky for big things over the next couple of years; discover his performances for yourself on Classic FM.
Rudolf Koelman - Paganini Violin Concertos Nos. 1 and 2
Violinist and composer Nicolo Paganini really stretched his instrument to its outer limits with his three concertos – as we hear on this new CD, which includes Nos. 1 and 2. Violinist Rudolf Koelman gives a lively and powerful performance of them both; he’s joined by the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jan Willem de Vriend.
Martin Helmchen - Piano Concertos
Pianist Martin Helmchen has recently been described by a reviewer as ‘a gifted new pianist I expect to hear for years’. Helmchen proves his worth on this new CD, which sees him performing concertos by Schumann and Dvorak. He’s joined by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Strasbourg, conducted by Marc Albrecht.
