Fact file
Place of Birth:
London
First broadcast:
Well, I took part in an on-air competition when I was about 12 - does that count? (I got the question wrong too but did get a radio station pen for my efforts). First broadcast I got paid for was working for Trent FM in Nottingham.
First experience of classical music:
School and TV adverts but the first time it really touched me was hearing Luciano Pavarotti sing Puccini's Nessun Dorma during the 1990 World Cup. Made me cry (England had just been knocked out by West Germany) and set me off on the path to discovering classical music.
Favourite piece of music:
That's a tough one. Can I have six please? Symphony No.5 by Sibelius, Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor, 'Fantasia On A Theme Of Thomas Tallis' by Vaughan Williams, Mozart's 'The Magic Flute', 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' by Joy Division and Paul Weller's 'You Do Something To Me'.
Musical personality (past/present) you’d most like to meet:
Placido Domingo from the present and from the past - Vaughan Williams .
Joined Classic FM:
1996 as a newsreader
Favourite composer:
Again - not easy. If you pushed me - it would have to be Mozart .
How do you relax:
Reading... radio... running.
Most memorable moment:
England winning the Ashes in '05. Interviewing Sir Simon Rattle in Berlin who wanted to know all the news from home and interviewing Bryn Terfel in New York who gave me some great recommendations of record shops to go to in the Big Apple.
